Restoration - J22 Summary

PROJECT SUMMARY

We should start out by saying that none of us on the j22 restoration project has ever restored a boat before. In fact, none of us had ever worked with fiberglass, epoxy, or sprayed paint with a gun. We are just a bunch of web geeks, designers and marketing people. If we can do it than anyone can as long as you are willing to try and fail. Eventually, you will achieve the results you are looking for.

It was great fun for all of us to learn some new things. Not so much fun having to re-sand the entire hull again after we did one pass too heavy with the spray gun but, we learned what not to do the next time. :) The big thing that made this project successful was we applied the same development principals to this project as we do with every internet project we develop. We researched, read, talked with professionals, created a detailed blue print so we knew where we were heading and finally, executed our plan. By doing this we saved a ton of money and stayed on schedule.

If you can read, watch videos and search Google you should have no trouble restoring your own boat. Don't be scared to mess up because you will. That's the only way we learn. The great thing is you can fill and sand again until it is right. NOTE: As soon as you get tired of re-sanding you will force yourself to learn it!

Our boat isn't perfect and we know where all the little flaws are but, it is Near Perfect and looks brand new at just a fraction of the cost of a New Boat. If you are smart you will let those little imperfections go so you can get your boat back in the water. There will always be things we need to work on and repair so our philosophy is, "Get the major things done and get the darn thing back in the water so we can starting having fun! You can fix the other things as time sails along"

If you have any questions about restoring your own J22 feel free to ask. We might be able to save you some time and money by learning from our mistakes.

Have a great day sailing!
